Residents of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s constituency are a harried lot, courtesy roads of the city, which are full of potholes, forcing people to experience bumpy rides and even accidents.

Residents have complained to the authorities for the poor condition of roads, but in vain.

The Tribune team, too, found the roads of Sector-13, one of the oldest sectors of the city, in worst condition, as most of the roads are damaged and full of potholes, posing serious threat to commuters. Broken roads are common in Model Town, one of the posh areas of the city and these have become a nightmare for commuters.

The roads near Namastey Chowk, near taxi stand, behind the bus stand, Mughal Canal, Nayaypuri, Karnal-Kunjpura road, Sectors-9,8,7,5 and the industrial area narrate the same story. The stretch between Meera Ghati Chowk and Committee Chowk and the stretch between Hospital Chowk and Guru Teg Bhadur School is in a bad state giving bumpy ride to motorists. Residents lament the officials’ apathy and say these roads require urgent attention. They blame the KMC for doing nothing despite collecting taxes.

“The Karnal Municipal Corporation collects tax from residents regularly, but nothing is done when it comes to providing basic facilities or services such as roads. Carpeting is not done regularly, due to which roads have become prone to accidents. After the rain last month, the condition of the roads became pitiable, indicating that there is poor quality check at the time of construction or carpeting of roads. The maintenance work should be monitored by the authorities,” said Lalit Kumar, a resident.

Sidharth Chaudhary, another resident, said: “The roads in Sector-13 are in pitiable condition as these are full of potholes. Most of the ruling BJP leaders have their residences in this sector, but it seems they have no problem with these roads as they do not ask the authorities for maintenance despite bringing the issue into their notices.”

Puneet Kumar, another resident, said: “Development in the CM’s city reflects the development in the state. If roads are not good here, one can imagine the level of development in the state.”

Residents demand a mechanism to check the quality of material used for re-carpeting of roads.

“The government must ensure a mechanism to check the quality of material used in re-carpeting roads in Haryana,” said Vijay Arora, a resident.

Councillors also raise the issue of poor roads with the authorities. They complain that the residents of their wards highlight the issue of poor condition of roads all the time. “I have raised the issue of pitiable condition of roads with the Commissioner KMC, who assured me to repair all roads at the earliest. The residents of my ward always complain of poor roads,” said a BJP councillor.

Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav admits that some of the councillors have brought the issue of roads to his notice. “I have constituted a team comprising engineers to check the roads that fall under the KMC limits. The carpeting of roads will be done at the earliest,” he said.
