Karnal, January 8

The strike called by various trade unions on Tuesday witnessed a poor response in Karnal as the city life looked normal. Even bus services and offices of various departments functioned as usual. However, works related to banks were affected to some extent as some banks remained closed.

Scores of employees, under the banner of Sarv Karamchari Sangh took out a protest march in the city. They raised slogans against the BJP government and demanded implementation of the old pension scheme instead of the new, regularisation of contractual employees, and Rs 18,000 as minimum wages till the regularisation of employees.

Krishan Sharma, a protesting employee leader, alleged that the BJP had failed to fulfill its promises made to employees during elections.

Ten trade unions of the country had called for the strike, in which employees of all departments participated.

He claimed it was a successful strike and said some of the employees associations aligned towards the BJP kept away from the strike, but it received a good overall response.
