Police initiate probe into antecedents of youth

The police have initiated a probe into antecedents of a youth of Dango village, who was booked under Sections 420, 170 and 171 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly impersonating as a Sub-Inspector of the Punjab Police posted at the Commissionerate in Amritsar.

Though the police have recovered an identity card from the accused in which he was wearing uniform, they are yet to recover uniform or insignia, if any. The police have not given any information about raids conducted on his residence.

However the accused, identified as Dharminder Singh of Dango, has confessed to have prepared identity cards for free passage at toll plazas.

SHO Dehlon Kulwant Singh said Gurbakhshish Singh, in charge of the Merado Colony police chowki, had arrested the accused at a special naka laid near Gill village on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road. After getting a tip-off, the police arrested the accused. The police came to know that the accused used to pose as an Inspector of the Punjab Police.

Dharminder was travelling in a car (PB 10 DT 5050) at the time of his arrest.

The investigation has revealed that Dharminder was married in a family headed by a former police officer posted in Amritsar district. Though the exact sequence of events is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that Dharminder was instigated to impersonate as a police inspector after he started visiting his in-law’s house frequently.

Sources said Dharminder had been associated with the film industry as an action director. “It was only a year ago when we came to know that his in-laws have managed to get him posted as an Inspector in the Punjab Police,” said a resident, adding that people got convinced about his appointment as his father-in-law was also a police officer.

SHO Kulwant Singh said, “So far, we have ascertained that the identity card is fake and he had produced it to influence the cops posted at the naka too. We are yet to recover the uniform used for preparing the ID card or misguiding innocent people.”
