One person has been arrested for stealing a large stash of firearms from a gun house in Amritsar’s Jandiala, Punjab Police said on Wednesday—a development that comes two days after the gun house reported 44 of its weapons missing.

Police identified the suspect as Vikramjit Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran’s Nanaksar mohalla, and said three of his accomplices were still on the run.  Inspector General Border Range SPS Parmar, who held a press conference after the arrest, said police interrogation of the suspect led them to a house under construction, where they found nine pistols, 35 revolvers and 1,300 bullets—all of which had gone missing from the gun house.

The suspect, who police said had no previous criminal records—was training at an Industrial Training Institute.  Police said they were now looking for three other people involved in the case—two of whom were mechanics who specialised in installing air conditioners.

Initial reports put the number of fire arms at 67.

Police also said that the suspect and his accomplices, finding it difficult of dispose of the stash of firearms they had stolen, had kept it hidden at the unfinished building.
