Katra, February 14

A mega drive to plant more than one lakh saplings in Trikuta Hills in next 30 days was launched on Thursday.

District Development Commissioner (DDC) Doifode Sagar Dattatray started the drive by planting a sapling at Panthal village in the foothill of the hills.

Around 3,000 plants of different species were planted across the hill range on Thursday. The drive has been launched by the Reasi rural development department as a part of MGNREGA campaign to encourage green cover in the district in coordination with the forest department.

Speaking on the occasion, the DDC called upon the students and locals to come forward to spread awareness about green cover and encourage more people to participate in the plantation drive.

“Our target is to plant one lakhs plants in next 30 days in the hills,” the DDC said while highlighting the role played by trees in preventing landslides, recharging the ground water and preventing soil erosion. — OC
