Students and faculty members of Government Medical College, in association with NGO Voice of Amritsar (VOA), organised a tree plantation drive behind the ENT hospital on Majitha Road here on Sunday. Principal Dr Sujata Sharma and Medical Superintendent Dr Surinder Paul also attended the event and lauded the efforts.
Senior VOA member Seenu Arora said earlier the area behind the hospital was occupied by wild weeds. “We cleared the weeds to make the tree plantation drive possible,” he said, adding that they have been organising plantation drives every Sunday for the past six weeks. “We were excited as medical students and faculty had invited us for the drive,” he said. Arora said residents of localities who want to plant trees could contact them.
Dr Sujata while speaking on the occasion said everybody should to plant trees as it help in decreasing the pollution levels.
Dr Rakesh Sharma, founder president of the NGO and professor of surgery at GMC, said, “A team of around 100 volunteers first cleared the wild weeds from the spots where the trees were planted. It was a nice and novel experience seeing medical students indulging in physical work for the cause of environment protection.”
Dr Karamjit Singh, head, Department of Eye, said, “Our students who participated in the drive have assured that they will also take care of the saplings. It is hard for medical students to spare time but we are really impressed by the gesture.”
