The UK is about to get its first children's book about Brexit. The new picture book, an impartial retelling of the Brexit story that sees animals depict famous political figures, has been created after research revealed that a third of UK parents (32 per cent) could not explain the UK's current situation to their children if asked.
Titled I Want to Leave the Book, the 32-page story — from author Richard David Lawman — was published by WatAdventure in October.
David Cameron appears in the book as a pig named Percy Hogtrotter, while Theresa May is depicted as a hamster and Boris Johnson a Highland Cow.
It'll come accompanied with a glossary section so that parents will be able to explain key terms relating to Brexit to their children.
Lawman said: "As a father to an inquisitive four-year-old, I started to think about how I would explain the current political landscape to my daughter and the answer was, I couldn't."
He called the book "the answer to my dilemma," adding: "My feelings echo that of the nation — that it is important that younger generations understand Brexit as an important piece of history — and 89 per cent of the people we surveyed agree.
"However, we need to make these complex political issues as digestible as possible to ensure that younger generations truly engage and understand the wider moral backdrop of these events."
The plot revolves around a group of animals who, after debating whether they should stay in the book, decide to leave, but find themselves unable to agree on what type of story they want to be in.
Last month, after years of silence, Cameron denounced "false and ludicrous" allegations that he'd inserted "a private part of his anatomy" into a dead pig's mouth as part of the process of joining the exclusive Piers Gaveston Society as a student at Oxford University.
