An NRI from the UK has changed the picture of Government Primary School, Phillaur, as he, along with his family, has got four rooms built in the school.

Gurcharan Singh, along with his family, has been helping the school by donating various items which students need the most.

Until now, nearly 200 students of five classes (I to V) used to sit in two rooms. As per information, the four other rooms were in a deplorable state and also declared unsafe due to which the students used to adjust themselves in two rooms.

The school was established in 1939 and the building was getting deteriorated. Four rooms of the school were also declared unsafe. The poor condition of the school was also taking a toll on the results of the school and its strength was also decreasing rapidly. Now, the NRI have also helping the school by installing water filters there to ensure that the students drink clean water.

Sometimes, the students would also study in the principal’s office due to space crunch. Meenu Goel, the principal of the school, said the family of Gurcharan was in contact with the school for the past few years.

“During extreme weather conditions, students used to face difficulties but since the time the NRI has come in contact with the school, the scenario has changed.

“The family of the NRI always says that giving donation to the school gives them immense contentment,” the principal said.

She said a function would be held on November 26 in the school where the NRI would be present. Now, the students would sit freely in these rooms.

The principal said: “We had noticed that the results were declining as there was no proper atmosphere for students to study due to lack of seating arrangements but since everything has been sorted out, I am sure that the results will be improved too.”
