Acting on a tip-off, the special task force nabbed Amarinderpal Singh of Batala for allegedly possessing over 200 gm of heroin on Monday. He was arrested from the court complex area where he had come to hand over the contraband to a jail inmate. The jail inmate had been brought from the Amritsar Central Jail for a hearing.
Rashpal Singh Ghuman, AIG, STF, confirmed the development. He said search was on and the police were expecting more seizure from him.
According to sources in the STF, there was a specific input that he was involved in drug peddling and used to supply drugs to jail inmates. He had arrived in a luxury car which was also taken into custody for further investigation. The police also found passports in the car. The investigation is being carried out keeping different angles in mind to unearth the nexus.
It has been learnt that the accused, initially, tried to escape from the complex after he got wind of the presence of an STF team for his arrest. However, the STF team managed to nab him.
Ghuman said his interrogation could lead to exposure of the drug cartel involved in supplying drugs inside the high security jail. The police have also prepared a list of prisoners and undertrials who had come for hearing in the court complex.
Meanwhile, the STF also arrested Rahul Kumar, alias Pinku, of Guru Nanak Colony and Shiva of Lahori Gate for allegedly possessing 70 gm of heroin. A case has been registered against them and further interrogation is under way.
