Education Dept to hold state-level function, competitions next month

The Education Department has been coming up with several interesting events to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. From November 4 to 7, a state-level function will be held in various districts. The events will be held in Patiala, Amritsar, Mohali, Ropar, Ludhiana, Kapurthala and Moga.

The events and competitions which will be held are Punjabi-speaking competition, ‘Gurbani ucharan’, Sikh virasat exhibition, ‘Dastar bandi’, along with others such as essay-writing, declamation, shabad competition.

The dastar-bandi competition will be held in Ropar on November 7. The Sikh Virasat exhibition will also be showcased in Ropar on the same date. Also, a question-answer round and a quiz will be held in Kapurthala on November 5. PowerPoint presentations will also be shown in Moga on November 5.

Besides, the department is also preparing a book which will be released on the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. It will include content based on the life of the first Sikh Guru for which the department has invited material from government school students and teachers.

The department in a circular to school principals has said the creations (poetry, story or essay) must be original and it should not have got printed in any newspaper, magazine or book in the past. It also mentioned that the words included must go according to the child’s psychology.

The circular also reads that the works must be sent after proper checking and proofreading. These should not be lengthy and should be written in a clean way. It was also stated that not only an essay or a story, but a painting can also be sent by the students.

Notably, the department has been organising various activities in schools such as essay writing competitions, poster-making and theatrical performances.

Games for visually challenged

The National Federation of the Blind will organise national athletics games for visually challenged in Ludhiana in the next month which will also be dedicated to the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. The federation will hold the games on its own.

Members of the state federation had recently held a meeting in this regard in New Delhi with a national-level delegation. The games will include 200m, 400m, 800m, 1,500m, 5,000m, shot-put, discus throw, javelin throw, and long jump events. The categories will vary from U-15, U-20, and senior categories in the games. General secretary of the Punjab wing of the federation Balwinder Chahal said the Paralympics Committee of India would hold camps for players and coaches from the SAI would organise training camps. — TNS
