Panipat, December 31

Supporters of the Independent councillor from Ward 22 on Sunday raised slogans against the BJP leaders and burnt the party flag and banners here. The protesters also blockade the Assandh road.

Sources said Independent councillor Chanchal Dawar was to join the BJP on Sunday in the presence of senior party leaders and they had organised a programme in Kachha Camp colony and her husband Yogesh Dawar had put up banners and hoardings in different areas of the ward containing photographs of State Transport Minister Krishan Panwar, MLAs Mahipal Dhanda and Rohita Rewri, Rewri’s husband Surender Rewri, newly-elected Mayor Avneet Kaur and district BJP president Pramod Vij.

Yogesh said, “We had invited people to attend the programme at 10 am, but the BJP leaders did not reach till 1pm and not even picked up their phones.”

The supporters got angry and started raising slogans against the BJP leaders and burnt the flag, banners and posters of the BJP leaders and also blocked the Assandh road near Balaji Hospital. The police reached the spot and pacified the protesters.

Bhagwan Das Dawar, father-in-law of Chanchal, and Yogesh alleged that the MLAs and the Minister had assured them to come to the programme, but they did not come and insulted the residents of the area.

Deepak Saluja, media in charge of the BJP, said any leader could join the party with the prior permission of the local core committee and the higher authorities of the party at the state level. The councillor and her supporters had to wait for the approval of the party leaders, he added.

Meanwhile, the police booked several persons for blocking the road.
