This time, voters in various villages showed their faith in young contenders to serve as sarpanches in the panchayat elections.

Satnam Singh Sabi (27), a graduate from Moga village in Bhogpur, defeated his rival by just by two votes. There was a close contest between Satnam and his opponent, who was backed by the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Sabi gathered 282 votes while his opponent got 280 votes. Sabi said after finishing his studies in 2015, he involved in various social activities for which he also received a district award.

“After winning the award, villagers had asked me to contest the elections from the village. Thereafter, I decided to contest. I am looking forward to work for my village,” added Sabi.

He said his priority would be to get a degree college built in the village. “The Bhogpur block lacks a degree college which is the major need at present,” he added.

“Since health is of the utmost importance for everyone, I want to give youngsters of the village of their own gym,” he said, adding that the sewage problem will be solved once he takes charge. He said grants for various development works will be sought.

Talking about the polls, he said it was a close contest and the situation was nerve racking. “It was worth waiting and now, I have got the position and my entire focus will be on how to improve the scenario of my village,” he said.

Ex MLA and Congress leader from Nakodar Jagbir Brar said from the constituency, various young Sarpanches had been selected.

Rajnish Gautam from Choor village, Darbara Singh Dari from Khanpur Dhadda, Prabhjot Singh from Rahimpur village, Inderjit Singh from Bir village and Rupinder Singh Binda from Litran village are some of young sarpanches, who won the elections.

However, in some villages, youngsters failed to win the elections. A 21-year-old law student could not win the polls from Sattowali village.
