Training women to combat acid attackers can spur a change

Gender stereotyping perpetuates gender-specific violence. Acid attacks are the most despicable acts of violence against women. In many cases of acid attack, the victim is known to the accused - there is an element of coercion that precedes the heinous act. 

Apart from tough laws, the implementation of the laws is equally important. Attitudinal change is, by far, even more important. Parents must treat both sons and daughters without any gender bias or prejudice. Gender sensitization lessons must start early in childhood. Women's participation in decision-making and their right to refuse - families must recognize these basics. 

Women, on their part, have to learn the techniques of self-assertion and self-defence. Women have to stop paying a price for living their life on their terms.
