Several investors have been duped of over Rs 27 lakh by a fake investment company on the pretext of giving huge returns.

Those booked have been identified as directors/partners of the company Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Sector 79, Mohali, and Baljinder Singh of Muktsar. They run a company, namely Etokri, based at Major Tower, Mohali. According to the police, the company had no permission from the RBI to run such operations.

The complainant, Dhiraj Dawar of Dhoka Mohalla, told the police that the suspects had lured him into investing a meagre amount in their company. “I was told by the company that if I create a profile on the company’s website after paying just Rs 1,500, I will get good returns. I asked my near and dear ones to invest in the company and created around 368 IDs on the Etokri website. I gave the company more than Rs 31 lakh of which Rs 3.17 lakh was returned to me. The company did not return the remaining Rs 27 lakh despite my repeated requests,” said the complainant.

He lodged a complaint with the Police Commissioner who marked an inquiry to the ADCP Headquarters and Security. The ADCP recommended registration of a case under sections 406, 420 of IPC and 4, 5, 6 of the The Prize Chits and Money Circulation Scheme (banning) Act 1978.
