Renowned singer Kanika Kapoor, who started her playback singing career with Baby Doll, is in the news these days for being a coach on Star Plus’ The Voice. In an interview with us, Kanika talks about her new innings on TV and much more.

How has your journey been so far?

From Jugniji to Baby Doll and my other favourite songs like Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan, my journey has been super duper. I am the luckiest one to be accepted in Bollywood.

Why have you opted for an outing on television now?

I made the decision because I really liked the concept of the show where the emphasis is on the voice more than anything. I want to help new talent get the right opportunities and through this show I am able to do that.

We hear, you are a trained classical singer. Your comments.

Yes, I am from Benaras Gharana and a trained singer. Classical music has always been my favourite.

What made you take up the role of a coach on The Voice?

The entire show is very exciting and gives the budding singers a platform to make their voices be heard. My role as a coach is very interesting as I get a chance to groom and mentor the singing talent of the country.

How does it feel to share space with the music icon A R Rahman?

It is a very proud moment for me to be a part of the show where A R Rahman is a super guru. I have always admired A R Rahman sir and it is like a dream come true to share space with him on the show.

What differentiates The Voice from other singing reality shows?

There are no judges instead only coaches in the show and they are present to groom and nurture the contestants instead of judging their vocal talent.

What kind of voice on the show will stand out and catch your attention?

The most important thing for a singer is soul and expression and that is what I am looking for in the contestants as well. I want the contestants to come and sing their heart out.

How is your rapport with the other coaches?

We share an amazing friendship and great camaraderie, which shows both onscreen and offscreen.

How is Kanika Kapoor in real life?

I am very loving and extremely protective. I follow the live-and-let-live philosophy.
