Olympian Khushbir Kaur has become the brand ambassador of ‘Maan Dhian Te’, an NGO. Her endeavour is likely to inspire more girls to join sports in the region. The Arjuna awardee athlete is a native of Nikka Rasulpur village, near Chowk Mehta.
She joined the galaxy of star athletes of the country when she scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman athlete to win a silver medal in the 21-km race walk in the Asian Games held in Incheon, South Korea, in 2014. Gurinder Singh Mattu, president of the NGO, said Khushbir was chosen as the brand ambassador as she had crafted success out of extremely tough domestic situation.
Another woman, her mother Jasbir Kaur, was also an inspiration to encourage her to carve out a career in sports. It was the dream of her mother to see Kushbir as a medal winner, which prompted her to toil on the ground, he remarked. — TNS
