Mandi, February 15

The Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) in Mandi has started reporting crime cases involving comparison of voice samples.

Rajesh Verma, deputy director of the laboratory, said two such cases were reported recently.

“A voice comparison division was created in the State FSL (Forensic Science Lab) in Junga in 2015, but the laboratory could start reporting cases only after the procurement of a voice-print software.

The RFSL has professionals for the purpose. He said earlier, auditory-spectrographic approach was used and accepted for voice comparison, but there was a need to involve statistical analysis as per modern requirements.

“The RFSL has already tied up with IIT-Mandi for developing such facilities and scientists in both organisations are working on the development and of these methods. Apart from voice comparison, image and video-examination cases are also received in the laboratory. — TNS
