There was a time when Sonam Bajwa took up work even when she did not relate with it, but, thankfully, things have changed and the actress is working on making the most of this authority.
“During my initial days, I agreed to most of the offers because I was still making a space for myself in the industry but today I deny what I think doesn’t go with me. I want to actually take up projects that have a social message.”
Seen in the recent Punjabi flick Guddiyan Patole, it was something she had never done before and she has done it quite well. Sonam says a lot went into the performance. “My role demanded a lot of effort, energy and time. It was challenging but equally rewarding. I am sure it was the first time we showcased a Punjabi girl being who she is. My character said what she believed in, no matter who got offended. The most beautiful part was how the granddaughter-grandmother relationship is built in the most modern way possible. From going to a salon to dancing in a nightclub with a grandmother, these are all very contemporary thoughts.”
Gurnaam Bhullar, who debuted in acting with this film, played the lead opposite her and their romance was understated. How romantic is she in real life? We ask. “I can’t really say much on that because I am not dating anyone. There is actually no time also. I am working all year round. But whenever love happens in my life, I’ve be happy to share it with you,” she smiles and continues, “There was a time when celebs kept their relationships under wraps but times have changed.”
Having acted in Tamil films, it’s Pollywood where she feels at home. “South films are a great experience but language is a barrier. I am depended on the director in those films. On the other hand, Punjabi is my language. I enjoy it, understand it and speak fluently in it, so the scope of improvisation gives a lot of freedom and lends a personal touch to the characters I play in Punjabi films.”
Sonam is hopefully to land a role in Bollywood and says she will be announcing it before this year ends. Meanwhile, she is busy basking in the love that people shower on her and the independence her profession has given her, to take care of her family and make her own decisions. These, she says, are the rewards she has reaped for putting in all hard work and sincerity into her profession.
