Footpaths in most parts of the city have been crying for attention. It is a picture of neglect at Bhai Bala Chowk, Bharat Nagar Chowk, Dugri Road Canal Bridge and outside Bhai Chatar Singh Park, among others.

Residents have been complaining about broken footpaths at Dugri Canal Bridge and Bhai Bala Chowk for two years now but authority concerned has failed to get things in order.

The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation officials said the Irrigation Department was responsible for repairing footpaths at the Canal bridges and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on Ferozepur Road.

Satish Sachdeva, a retired mass media officer from the Health Department said, “The city is not pedestrian friendly. Residents are forced to walk on road due to broken footpaths. Moreover, footpaths are not there in most of the areas. Pedestrians are getting injured due to poor condition of footpaths. My wife sustained a foot injury while walking on a broken footpath. The government should fix responsibility so that footpaths are repaired.”

“Safety of pedestrians is always been ignored. There is no footpath at Southern Bypass flyovers, Lakkar Bridge and Elevated Road, among others. Footpath at Bhai Bala Chowk is in poor condition for the last two years. We have raised the issue multiple times but to no avail. When we pay taxes, what stops the government from repairing footpaths?” said Varinder Kumar, a resident of Urban Estate.

Ludhiana MC’s Superintending Engineer HS Bhullar said, “The Irrigation Department constructed the Canal Bridges and they are supposed to get them repaired. Bhai Bala Chowk and Bharat Nagar Chowk on Ferozepur Road has come under the ambit of the NHAI as elevated road project is underway.”
