Chandigarh, November 29

The PGI has decided not to extend the license period of a cafeteria in the new OPD block.

“Due to several complaints, the licensee was not granted extension beyond December 2. A new tender regarding the same was floated on October 9,” said PGI spokesperson Manju Wadwalkar.

However, the institute has failed to curb the widespread malpractice of overcharging. Also, it has been occupying more than the sanctioned space in various canteens.

Various canteens at the institute are allegedly fleecing poor patients and attendants by charging exorbitant rates on most eatables. The rates being charged are much more than those approved by the institute. On the other hand, the officials concerned have turned a blind eye to the “irregularities”.

“Cases of overcharging, if any, brought to the notice of the PGI, are being investigated by the area inspection committee and suitable penalty is being imposed on defaulters,” the PGI said. Meanwhile, authorities said a penalty of Rs 6,692 had been imposed on the licensee for selling new born babies’ clothes at overpriced rate.

However, employees and patients said, “Checking is not done on a regular basis and fines are minimal and a mere formality. It has failed to act as a deterrent, thus violations continue.”
