Chandigarh, December 18
This year no district-level livestock championship will take place and only state-level competitions will take place from next month during the 11th National Livestock Championship.
The livestock championship started around 11 years back in the state but it will be for the first time when district-level competitions will not take place. As per the system so far, cattle breeders would first participate at the championships at the district level. And the winners from the district championships would participate in the national championship.
Instead of district championships, this year only milking competitions of cattle have been taking place at the block level. However, the lack of facilities has created a lot of problems to the breeders.
On December 8, just a day after participating in a block-level milking championship at Harsha Chhina in Amritsar district, a Sahiwal cow died allegedly due to remaining under the open sky in cold weather. Following that the breeders threatened the veterinary staff and alleged that the cow died as the milking championship was organised under the open sky in extreme cold weather.
Dr Inderjeet Singh, Director, state’s Department of Animal Husbandry, said they were trying to revamp the championship. “Earlier beauty of the animal used to be the only yardstick. But we are trying to make milk as the main parameter,” he said. — TNS
