Rohtak, December 6

The special investigating team (SIT) probing the rape case of a 9-year-old girl by her father has revealed that the accused, a migrant labourer, had given rat poison to his daughter after raping her. The girl died on December 3.

The accused, who was arrested by the SIT from Indore in Madhya Pradesh yesterday, was produced before a Rohtak court today, which remanded him in police custody for two days.

Addressing a news conference here this evening, the SIT in-charge, DSP Gorakhpal Rana, said the accused, who had been living in Rohtak for about 9 years, had estranged relations with his wife and they were living separately for 7-8 months.

“The couple had three daughters and a son. They were sleeping at their father’s place on the intervening night of November 27 and 28. The man raped his eldest daughter and warned her against revealing it,” said the SIT in-charge.

On the next morning, the man left his children with his wife and went to the nut-bolt factory where he worked, the DSP in-charge stated, adding that the accused then planned to kill his daughter to conceal her rape.

“He bought rat poison from market, mixed it with wheat-flour and gave it to his daughter on the morning of December 2. When the girl’s condition deteriorated on December 3, her mother informed the police and hence the matter came to light,” said Rana.

The girl was taken to the Civil Hospital for medical examination and treatment on the same day, but she could not be saved.

An FIR under Sections 376 AB, 302 and 328 of the IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered, but the accused fled Rohtak on the same day. He went to Delhi via Panipat and eventually reached Indore in Madhya Pradesh.

“He kept on changing his location to evade arrest. However, the SIT arrested the accused from Indore yesterday. He was brought to Rohtak and produced before a local court today,” he stated.

It may be pertinent to mention here that the post-mortem examination of the girl’s body had confirmed sexual assault, though the exact cause of her death has not been ascertained as yet.
