C’garh shootout: ITBP jawan cremated with honours

ITBP head constable Mahinder Singh, who was among those killed by a constable at the 45 Battalion, ITBP, in Kadenar, Chhattisgarh, on December 4 was cremated with full honours at his native Sandyar village in Ghumarwin, Bilaspur district today. His son lit the pyre amid heart-rending scenes. Villagers and other dignitaries bid a tearful adieu to the soldier.

Mahinder Singh, who was in early thirtees, is survived by his mother Leela Devi, wife Seema Devi and two sons Arunav and Shourya, studying in Class II and III. His father Karam Singh Jamwal had retired as inspector from the ITBP.

Besides him, head constable Daljit Singh (Ludhiana), constable Surjit Sarkar, (Burdwan, West Bengal), constable Biswaroop Mahtoo, (Purulia, West Bengal) and constable Bijeesh, (Kozhikode, Kerala) were killed when constable Masudul Rahman from Nadia in West Bengal indiscriminately fired at other jawans and then shot himself.

Two jawans, Ullahas from Kerala and Sita Ram from Rajasthan were seriously injured and rushed to hospital at Raipur. Sources said the constable Masudul was reportedly enraged following refusal of leave.
