Bathinda, December 5

Students and faculty members of the SSD Group of Girls’ Colleges carried out a candle march in solidarity with Hyderabad rape victim in the city. The march started from the SSD Girls’ College premises and moved towards Sadhbahavana Chowk via Amrik Singh Road and Fire Brigade Chowk.

Later, candles were lit near Fire Brigade circle and at the Sadhbhavana chowk. Holding banners in their hands, the participants raised slogans such as ‘we want justice’, ‘no mercy to rapists’, ‘we want security’ and ‘stop rape culture’ during the march.

Students, faculty and executive members of the management expressed their deep condolences and urged the government to enact a strong law against the most heinous crime of rape. They also said speedy trials and strict punishment such as death sentence must be given to culprits to send a message of deterrence for others.

The students said there was a lot to be done to ensure safety of women in public places, especially during late evening and night hours. They said the night drop facility by the state government was a laudable move but to address the larger concern at hand, only stern punishment to rapists would act as a deterrent.

Along with the Sabha president Promod Mittal and college president Sanjay Goyal, principal of the Women Institute of Technology Neeru Garg, principal of Education College Anu Malhotra participated in the candle march. Over 100 staff members and around 300 students joined the rally.
