A 20-year-old woman died under mysterious circumstances at Naushera Kalan village here on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Parveen, a resident of the village.

The police said on the statement of Parveen’s mother Sunita, they had started proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC (unnatural death), but later in the evening the family members of the victim alleged police inaction and staged a protest on Airport Road. The family demanded the registration of a case against an unmarried man of the same village for his murder.

According to the information, Parveen was married to a resident of Housing Board Colony three years ago and had a child. She got divorce from her husband through panchayat. After divorce, she had been living with her in-laws at Naushera Kalan. Now, she was allegedly in relationship with Shera, an unmarried boy, from the same village.

The police claimed that the victim’s mother gave a statement in the morning that Parveen and Shera went to market on Wednesday evening and had a burger. Parveen complained of pain in the stomach in the night. Sunita called Shera who took Parveen at a local hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

Leading the protest in the evening, Sunita alleged that Shera gave some poisonous substance to her daughter. “She had been in relationship with Shera for the last one year. Shera wanted to get married with some other (unmarried) girl and did not accept Parveen as she had a child from her previous marriage. He gave some poisonous substance to get rid of her. We demanded murder charges against Shera. The police are favouring him,” added Sunita.

Kashmir Singh, SHO, Kambo police station, stated that proceedings had been started on the statement of her mother in the morning. The police assured the demonstrators that they would add relevant sections in the case after a postmortem report. After police assurance, the family withdrew the protest.
