After the SAD accused gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria of threatening senior party leader Bikram Majithia for exposing the gangster’s links, the kabaddi federation complained to the Punjab DGP on Thursday that he was also issuing threats to officials and players.
A delegation of the North India Circle Style Kabaddi Federation (NICKF) met DGP Dinkar Gupta and gave details of phones used by Bhagwanpuria from Patiala Jail where he is lodged. They also alleged that Bhagwanpuria was running a parallel kabaddi federation and asking players to participate in matches conducted by that association only.
The DGP told The Tribune that he had marked an inquiry into the allegations against the gangster. While a dossier by the Tarn Taran police claimed he was running drugs and ransom racket from Patiala Jail, the Akalis alleged Jails Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa was patronising him.
Randhawa had counter-alleged that Bhagwanpuria had used the clout of Akali leaders earlier. He has been booked in fresh cases recently which shows the Congress government took strict action against the gangsters.
Surjan Singh Chatha, president of the NICKF, in the complaint to the DGP alleged that some top gangsters were trying to dominate various kabaddi tournaments for monetary benefits. They said Bhagwanpuria was leading the racket.
