Agri-experts dwell on ruminant health, mgmt

College of Veterinary Science, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), organised a two-day workshop on ‘Improving small ruminant health and management for increasing learning outcomes amongst young vets’ under the aegis of the Institutional Development Plan, a National Agriculture Higher Education Programme (IDP-NAHEP) programme.

A total of 50 BVSc&AH students participated in this programme. Parkash Singh Brar, dean-cum-principal investigator of IDP project, said the IDP project was a World Bank project awarded by the ICAR under National Agriculture Higher Education Programme. In this programme, university would organise various workshops/practical training programmes/visits to industries and other national and international institutes to improve the competency and skill of undergraduate students, he added.

For this workshop, Paula Menzies, Professor Emeritus, Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, Canada, was the special invitee and key speaker. Manish Kumar Chatli, organising secretary; Rajesh Kasrija and Nitin Mehta, joint organising secretaries of this workshop, said theory and hands-on-training sessions, related to improvement of management, production and health in sheep and goat, were conducted during the workshop.

Menzies delivered a talk on bio-security at goat farm, neonatal health care management and important bacterial and viral diseases of goats. Rajesh Kasrija, extension specialist, deliberated on goat farming for entrepreneurship development. Economist VP Singh delivered a lecture on economics of commercial goat farm. Manish Chatli delivered a lecture on value addition of goat milk and meat for employment generation.
