Chandigarh, November 21

The Department of Cardiology, PGIMER, added another feather to its cap by performing first ever twin transcatheter aortic valve insertion (TAVI) procedures.

A team of doctors led by Dr Parag Barwad and Dr Himanshu Gupta performed a successful procedure on 75-year-old female patient from Jammu who was suffering from severe aortic stenosis and severe calcified coronary artery disease and was unfit for surgery due to very high risk.

The doctors performed atherectomy of the left main artery followed by stenting and also did percutaneous valve placement for severe aortic stenosis in the same procedure in which indigenously devolved valve was deployed. Talking about the procedure, Dr Himanshu and Dr Parag said that that normally it is very difficult to perform both the procedures in same seating, however, in this particular patient both coronary artery disease and valve disease were critical and hence were treated in same seating.

This is the first procedure in India where doctors have used rotational atherectomy for calcified left main and implanted percutaneous aortic valve in the same procedure.

The procedure lasted close to four hours but the recovery of patient was quick and she was discharged after three days of the procedure. Recently, PGIMER started percutaneous aortic valve replacement under leadership of Professor Yash Paul Sharma, HOD, Cardiology.
