Panic gripped the area when a leopard strayed into a house at Sarsa Nangal village, near here today. Four women and two children were at home at the time of the incident.
The leopard was rescued by Wildlife Department officials with the help of a team from Chhatbir Zoo and local police after four hours.
Jaswant Kaur, one of the family members, said the leopard entered the house around 2 pm. Jaswant said after spotting it, she entered a room and locked it from inside while other family members climbed up the roof. After this, she informed regarding the incident to her son Jaswinder Singh. By the time Jaswinder reached the spot with a police team,the leopard had entered a room in the house.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Baljinder Singh shut the door of the room where the big cat was sitting inside. Soon Wildlife Department officials, led by Range Officer Surjit Singh, reached the spot and a team of officials from Chhatbir Zoo was also requisitioned.
Zoo officials, led by Dr Ashish Chugh, tried to tranqualise the leopard unsuccessfully. Finally, it was trapped in a cage put on the door of the room at 6.40 pm.
Surjit Singh said the leopard had strayed into the village from adjoining forests of Himachal Pradesh. Earlier also, leopards have been spotted and rescued in the district.
