In a suicide case where a city-based rice trader had committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in a hotel room near Clock Tower yesterday, the Kotwali police have arrested a Phagwara resident on the charge of abetment to suicide.

The suspect has been identified as Amit Kapoor, owner of Udit Agro, Food Grain Market, Phagwara.

Aditya Gandhi, a resident of Chandar Nagar, Civil Lines, in a statement given to the police said his father Sanjiv Gandhi had been into rice trading for the past seven years and did business in Ludhiana, Phagwara, Khanna and Jagraon.

He son said Kapoor had been harassing his father over some old business deals because of which his father slipped into depression, and committed suicide.

The investigating officer, ASI Amrik Singh, said after registering an FIR, the police conducted a raid at the suspected whereabouts of the suspect and arrested him.

On Tuesday, Sanjiv left home after informing the family that he was going to pay obeisance at Nankana Sahib, Pakistan. But instead of going to Pakistan, he booked a hotel room and committed suicide. He left a diary in which he had mentioned mental harassment by some trader.
