Bathinda, November 14

The court of Additional Session Judge Mohammad Gulzar has sentenced husband and in-laws of a married woman to seven years imprisonment in a five-year-old abetment to suicide case. The court upheld that the victim had committed suicide due to harassment by her in-laws, who were demanding dowry from her.

Reportedly, on November 15 in 2014, a case was registered at Nehianwala police station, wherein complainant Gursharan had stated that his elder sister Amanpreet Kaur, who was working as a teacher at Balahar Vinju village, was married to Gurlal Singh of Goniana Kalan village. Gursharan also told the police that his family had spent more than Rs50 lakh on her marriage. Amanpreet gave birth to a girl child, following which her in-laws started torturing her for not fulfilling their demand of dowry. In 2013, she delivered twin kids (a boy and girl) and later, her in-laws demanded Rs15 lakh for the customary celebrations for children’s birth, stated Gursharan.

On 15 November 2014, Amanpreet’s in-laws informed them that she has gone missing, alongwith her daughters from their house. Around 9 pm on the same day, an acquaintance to parents of Amanpreet informed that three bodies were floating on the surface of water in a tank on Goniana Mandi-Jaito road. Around 11 pm, the police reached the spot and fished out the dead bodies from the water tank. They were identified as Amanpreet and her two daughters.

The police had booked seven persons in the case. Out of them, four have been acquitted for want of concrete evidence against them. It is pertinent to mention here that woman’s husband Gurlal Singh is a son of Iqtar Brar, younger brother of then Youth Akali Dal district president Balkar Singh Brar.
