Bathinda, November 14

Students and faculty members of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), Bathinda, on Wednesday commemorated the 239th birth anniversary of Maharaja Ranjit Singh with enthusiasm by organising a function here.

Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Vice-Chancellor, led the faculty and staff of the university in paying rich floral tributes to the great Sikh emperor.

The VC talked about the ideals of great Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh and presented brief history of the leader of the Sikh empire that ruled the northwest Indian subcontinent in the early half of the 19th century. He was born in Gujranwala (now in Pakistan) on November 13, 1780, and died on June 27, 1839, in Lahore. He is also known as the ‘Sher-E-Punjab’ (Lion of the Punjab).

Professor Ishar, who himself a descendent of officials of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s army, which exhibits its valour in battle of Multan (Pakistan), presented his views on the contribution of Maharaja Ranjit Singh as a unifying and most dynamic leader of Indian history, who played pivotal role in promotion of education, social reforms, nation building and his iron hand rule in that era.

University Registrar Ashish Baldi expressed his gratitude towards Punjab government for carving a university in Malwa on the name of great Sikh Emperor. He announced a blood donation camp on November 15 to mark the historic day.

Savina Bansal, Dean Academic Affairs and Campus Director; Jasbir Singh Hundal, Dean Research and Development, senior faculty, deans and directors of the university graced the occasion. Giani Zail Singh School of Architecture and Planning head Jatinder Kaur presented a vote of thanks.
