Customs officials on Wednesday destroyed over 530 kg of heroin that was smuggled from Pakistan along with Pakistani salt on June 29.
The contraband was destroyed in an incinerator of a private firm in the presence of a high-level drug disposal committee. Dipak Gupta, Commissioner (Customs), in a statement issued here on Wednesday, said the decision to destroy the contraband was taken at a meeting attended by both Customs officials and officials of the National Investigating Agency (NIA) were present.
The seizure of 530.6-kg heroin was made by Customs authorities on June 29 at the Integrated Check Post. The drugs were concealed in bags of Pakistani salt. Though several persons were arrested in the case, the probe was later handed over to the NIA, after a request from Punjab Government to the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah.
