ULAANBAATAR (MONGOLIA): India were assured of a bagful of medals at the Asian Youth Boxing Championships after six of the country’s pugilists advanced to the semifinals with dominating victories here today.

India were assured of a bagful of medals at the Asian Youth Boxing Championships after six of the country’s pugilists advanced to the semifinals with dominating victories here today. Soy Selay (49kg), Aman (+91kg), Ankit Narwal (60kg), Naorem Chanu (51kg), Jasmine (57kg) and Vinka (64kg) made the last-four stage. Selay defeated Philippines’ Flint Jara 5-0, while Aman (+91kg) out-punched Taiwan’s Kai-Hsung Wang in a bout that didn’t go the full distance. Narwal was also up against a Taiwanese, Yu Lin, and the Indian prevailed 5-0. In the women’s draw, Chanu claimed a 5-0 triumph over South Korea’s Eunsu Sun. Jasmine got the better of Japan’s Kimura Mona, while Vinka sailed past Taiwan’s  Hsueh-Tzu Tsui. However, Neha Kasnyal (60kg) and Rohit Mor (52kg) bowed out following quarterfinals losses.

Desperate to bring top cricket teams to the country, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has approached South Africa for a limited-overs series next year. PCB has also got in touch with Ireland for a series. PCB is also trying to convince Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to visit Pakistan in December and January to play the ICC World Test Championship matches.

Dutee Chand named in TIME 100 Next list

Indian sprinter Dutee Chand has been named in the TIME 100 Next, an expansion of the TIME 100 list of the most influential persons in the world. The list, an initiative of TIME magazine, highlights 100 rising stars who are shaping the future of business, entertainment, sports, politics, health, science, activism etc. “I am delighted to receive this recognition from the TIME magazine. I believe in gender equality. I will continue to fight for the rights of young girls and women in sports as well as in the larger society,” Dutee said. Dutee had won two silver medals — 100m, 200m — at the Jakarta Asian Games and had become the first Indian woman sprinter to win gold at the Universiade in Napoli, where she competed in 100m.

I remember my first tournament and 300 feels a long time. I’m just feeling great and having played so many events, it’s surprising to me also. I didn’t realise it,” the 47-year-old Randhawa said.
