Public libraries cry for attention in Mohali

As many as six public libraries run by the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) need immediate attention. These libraries were constructed at public parks in Phase 4, 6, 10, 11 and Sector 69 and 70 and were functional for the past three months.

“These libraries face staff shortage, lack proper sanitation facilities and other amenities,” said Sukhdev Singh Patwari, municipal councillor.

“There are around 13 officials, who look after all the affairs of these six libraries. The MC has not paid emoluments of these employees for the past four months. Washrooms on these library premises are cleaned once in a week only,” added Patwari.

Expressing similar sentiments, Parmajit Singh Kahlon, another local councillor, alleged, “Libraries have no system of cataloguing books or enrolling members. Besides, there is no arrangement of drinking water here.” — TNS
