To keep his promises made during an election campaign in December last year, a sarpanch spent money from his own pocket to provide plots to more than five dozen homeless families.

Yogesh Saharan, who was elected sarpanch of Dhinganwali, 26 km from here, had assured the poor to allot plots under the Awas Yojana, but it could not be done.

Learning on Sunday that these families were planning to grab land where public pond existed for the past many years, he promised to arrange plots in less than a week. He reportedly arranged 2.25 acres and yesterday distributed allotment letters of 4-marla plot each to more than five dozen families. “I can’t afford to lose faith that these people reposed in me. It appeared that the allotment of plots under government schemes may not be possible in near future. So my family and associates endorsed the proposal to arrange the same from our own resources and earmark a colony for them,” Saharan added.
