Mohali: A motorcycle-borne person was killed after his bike hit a stray cattle near the traffic lights near Cheema Boilers Chowk in the Industrial Area, Phase VIII B, here. The victim has been identified as Kapil Dev (35), a contractor from Zirakpur. “Kapil was going to the airport from Balongi when the incident took place around 11 pm,” said the police. tns

Chandigarh: A 27-year-old youth has been arrested with opium. According to the police, Guddu, a resident of Bhagwanpura, near IT Park, was caught with 240 gm of opium. The suspect was arrested from Kishangarh. TNS

Civic body to get hydraulic tippers
Chandigarh: Mayor Rajesh Kalia on Wednesday said Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) would hand over nine hydraulic tippers for transportation of municipal solid waste from the transfer stations to the garbage processing plant. Besides tippers, 80-90 rehris are being given by GAIL under its CSR initiative. The Mayor said the hydraulic tippers would be attached with the sanitation fleet within the next 10 days. TNS
Unhealthy food items destroyed
Chandigarh: The Health Department held surprise inspections at food shops in the city and destroyed nearly 80 kg of contaminated food items. During a special drive for enforcement of the Food Safety and Standards Act, two teams of food safety officers visited several sweet shops and found food items exposed to dust and flies, hence unfit for consumption. Sweets shops in Sectors 15, 14, 22, 21, 19, 27, 30, 31, 32, 46, 44, 41 40, 38, 37 and 7 were checked. TNS
City air quality worsens
Chandigarh: Burning of stubble in the neighbouring states of Haryana and Punjab has further deteriorated the air quality index (AQI) in the city. The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) has recorded the AQI of 177 on Wednesday evening, the highest this season. As per the CPCC, AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'. TNS

Chandigarh: The Estate Office held a workshop for the stakeholders of the upcoming e-auction of residential and commercial properties, at the UT Guest House here on Wednesday. Special assembly
Patiala: Poverty Eradication and Food Day was celebrated at Police DAV Public School here on Wednesday. A special assembly was organised by students of Zinnia house. It started with an informative speech by Simran of Class XII. Students were also encouraged to give their opinions to eradicate poverty from the country. A short quiz was also conducted. Display boards and placards emphasised the significance of nutritious food for a healthy life. Addressing the students, Meena Thapar lauded the efforts of participants for the thought-provoking speech and their performance. St Xavier’s skaters shine
Chandigarh: St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, won 10 medals, including five gold, in the recently concluded State Skating Championship at the Sector 10 rink here. Viabhav Sharma won two gold medals, while Shayena, Arsh Chaudhary and Jasmine bagged a gold medal each. Danish, Vishu shine with ball
Chandigarh: GGD SD College, Sector 32, defeated DAV College, Sector 10, by seven wickets to win the Panjab University Inter-College Cricket Championship for Men. Electing to bat, DAV boys were bowled out for 100 runs in 17.2 overs. Mohammad Danish (3/18) and Vishu Kashyap (3/13) claimed three wickets each for SD College, while Vivek Vasisth returned with the figures of 2/10. Mayank Chaudhary (28) did the bulk of scoring for DAV College. In reply, SD College reached home in 15 overs, with Taranpreet Singh hitting a 48-ball 37 and Jagmeet Singh smashing 27 off 18 balls. Tennis c’ship from Oct 19
Chandigarh: Roots Tennis Academy, Zirakpur, will host the AITA National Ranking Champion Series Tennis Tournament from October 19. The championship will be held in U-12 and U-14 age-groups in both the boys’ and girls’ categories, the organisers said here on Wednesday. More than 150 players from all over India will be competing in the tournament. The qualifying round matches will be played on October 19 and 20, while the main draw matches will start from October 21. Interested players need to register for the qualifying round on October 18 between 12 pm and 2 pm. TNS
