Sangrur SSP Sandeep Garg on Tuesday suspended an ASI and Head Constable of the Anti-Narcotics Cell for allegedly slapping and abusing Kheri Sahib village sarpanch and a woman panchayat member.

The decision was taken after sarpanches of 15 villages along with other senior Congress leaders and converged at the house of Sunam halqa incharge Daman Thind Bajwa and announced to block the national highway and launch a stir against the Sangrur police.

“We have suspended ASI Hardeep Singh and Head Constable Jagtar Singh and assigned the probe to the SP (D). Investigations will be conducted on a fast pace,” said the SSP added.

After the SSP sent Sunam DSP Rajesh Snehi and other officers for a meeting, Congressmen decided to delay their protest for four days.

“Policemen slapped me repeatedly, removed my turban and also abused another panchayat member Gurdev Kaur. They used derogatory language against our caste. The police must register an FIR against all involved,” said Avtar Singh, sarpanch, Kheri Sahib village.

Bajwa said they had given four days to the police to take an action against the erring officers.

“If the police fail to take a strict action against them within four days, we will launch an agitation,” she added.
