Chandigarh, September 25

Decks have been cleared for providing canal water to over 1 lakh residents living at Dhanas and Sarangpur areas.

The Standing Finance Committee (SFC) of the UT Administration has approved the project of laying 8-km pipelines from the Sector 39 water works to the Sarangpur institutional area at an estimated cost of Rs 21.22 crore. Headed by UT Adviser Manoj Kumar Parida, the committee is highest body of the Administration, which takes the final call on major projects in the city.

A meeting of the committee was held today under the chairmanship of the Adviser and attended by the Finance Secretary, the Chief Engineer and the Chief Architect and other officials concerned with the project.

The additional pipeline will supply around 8.5 MGD water to the area. Currently, the families living in around 10,000 flats constructed under the slum rehabilitation project in Dhanas are getting water drawn from tube wells.

Besides, the Administration is also developing the Sarangpur institutional area. Over 50 acres will be allotted to the PGI for its extension centre. Many educational institutions are also coming up there.

Once this institutional area is fully developed, it would require approximately 4.5 MGD of water. Around 4 MGD of water will be required for the rehabilitation flats, proposed police housing colonies and the IRB complex. At present, water from 32 tube wells was being supplied to these areas.

Chandigarh will start getting additional water from Phase 5 and 6 of the Kajuali water works project next month.
