Mandi Dalit students told to sit separately, case registered

Dalit students of Government Senior Secondary School, Kiling, in Mandi district alleged caste-based discrimination by mid-day meal workers during the sports meet of under-12 held on the school premises on September 9.

The police registered a case a registered under the atrocity Act today. In a complaint, parents of the students alleged that two mid-day meal workers of the school had asked them to sit in a separate queue.

A delegation of parents met the Additional SP, Mandi, Puneet Raghu and urged him to look into the issue. The Additional SP directed the SHO to investigate the matter.

Dharam Chand, Hukum Chand, Tek Chand, the parents, told the police that the school authorities were trying to pressure students not to make the matter public.

SP Gurdev Chand Sharma said a case had been registered and investigation was underway. On the other hand, Deputy Director, Higher education, Mandi, Ashok Kumar has also initiated a departmental inquiry.

He said action would be taken accordingly.
