The owner of a club in the city reportedly received WhatsApp calls from a person who introduced himself as gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and demanded protection money.
Divye Malik (33), who runs ‘Boulevard’, a club in Sector 26, received a WhatsApp call on September 17. The caller, claiming to be Bishnoi, threatened Malik with dire consequences and demanded protection money from him.
The club owner was told that money could either be paid monthly or annually.
Malik claimed that he told the caller that he was out somewhere and could not talk at that time, following which the caller asked him to discuss the matter with his partner and revert to him with their decision.
The complainant had received the call from phone number 44-7399002929, which was provided to the police.
Meanwhile, a case under Sections 387 (putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion) and 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous caller) of the IPC has been registered against unknown person at the Sector 26 police station and an investigation has been initiated into it.
Police officials said it was too early to comment on who made the call. However, it seemed that someone had made the call on Bishnoi’s behest, they added.
