Abohar, September 19

In an embarrassing development for the BJP, its four councillors on Thursday supported the proposals forwarded by their Congress counterparts in a meeting of the Municipal Council here to approve various development works.

As the proposals were set to be dropped for want of quorum due to a boycott call given by the BJP-SAD alliance, which was in majority for the past nine years, BJP councillors Dharamvir Malkat, Thakur Dass Siwan, Mani Ram Adani and Anju Kakkar decided to complete the required quorum to help Congress pass the 31 proposals.

Two BJP councillors — Pramil Kalani, who had quit office as MC president as well as the House membership, and former BJP mandal president Rakesh Chhabra alias Titu — had been booked for property sale fraud last month. Both did not attend the meeting that was presided over by adhoc president Talwinder Singh Tuli.

The meeting started on a stormy note as BJP councillors alleged they were being cornered in carrying out development work of various wards. Congress councillors took on the rivals, alleging that they were causing hindrance in the process of development schemes that had been derailed due to the delay in electing president and vice president for the council for the past 18 months. Amidst the heated arguments, BJP-SAD alliance members announced to boycott the meeting. The House was informed that development work worth Rs 12 crore would be carried in different wards purely on merit basis.
