Chandigarh, September 15

The Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM) has submitted objections over the proposed ban on single-use plastic in the draft policy.

Anil Vohra, president of the CBM, said the CBM raised the point that thick carry bags were not single-use items and the NGT had also allowed using plastic carry bags of 50 micron. On the same pattern, carry bags made of virgin or recycled plastic should be allowed in the City Beautiful.

Charanjiv Singh, chairman of the CBM, said the proposal to ban plastic stationery products for office and education was totally unjustified in the draft as these were not single-use items.

The CBM also suggested that the Director (Environment) should be made coordinator for deciding the policy matter and the MC Commissioner should be made in-charge for enforcement instead of multiple departments dealing with the same matter. — TNS
