8 held for illegal mining

ROPAR: Eight persons were yesterday arrested for illegal mining in the Sutlej riverbed here. A tipper, a JCB machine, a car and a pick-up truck were impounded from the spot.

Eight persons were yesterday arrested for illegal mining in the Sutlej riverbed here. A tipper, a JCB machine, a car and a pick-up truck were impounded from the spot.

Local residents informed the police and media last night that over 10 persons were digging the riverbed near the cremation ground, which is hardly 1 km away from the offices and residences of the Ropar Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police.

Meanwhile, SSP Swapan Sharma has suspended ASI Subhash Chander for allegedly misbehaving with mediapersons. — TNS
