Amid religious fervour and extravaganza, Guru Nanak’s baraat left for Mata Sulakhni’s hometown, Batala, from Gurdwara Ber Sahib in Sultanpur Lodhi this morning.

While the ritual is celebrated every year, this time the celebrations were held at a larger scale as 2019 marks the 550th birth anniversary year of Guru Nanak. As the baraat went in the form of a Nagar Kirtan, led by Panj Pyaras, two helicopters were deployed for showering rose petals.

The palanquin of Guru Granth Sahib was decorated with flowers. Representatives of all political parties showed oneness on the issue. An Army band played tunes of religious hymns. Women jathas commuting in trolleys also recited shabad kirtan. Nihangs performed gatka and school students also participated in large numbers. The ardas was performed by head granthi Bhai Surjit Singh.

Among those present were Cabinet minister Vijay Inder Singla, Congress MLA Navtej Cheema, former SAD ministers Upinderjit Kaur and Jagir Kaur, SGPC members Gurpreet Kaur, Jarnail Singh Dogranwala and SDM Navneet Bal.
