Coming down heavily on the government for forcing the RBI board to share with it the central bank’s contingency reserve fund and dividend, the Opposition led by the Congress termed the move “monumental disaster” and demanded a “white paper” on the state of economy within a week.

Congress leader Anand Sharma said: “India is in a deep financial crisis. The economy is in a shambles. And India’s GDP is continuously falling.” Sharma pointed out that the difference between fiscal deficit projection in the Budget and Economic Survey was

Rs 1.7 lakh crore and the government had taken Rs 1.76 lakh crore from the RBI.

CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury alleged the government had “appropriated” 99 per cent of the profits of RBI since 2014.
