The Haryana Mahila Congress has put the Palwal police in the dock for not arresting those who attacked its district president Savita Choudhary in Palwal on August 10.

The party demanded intervention of the Director General of Police (DGP) into the matter, stating that it would launch an agitation if justice was not delivered.

“The government stands exposed in terms of law and order as the police have failed to arrest attackers two weeks after registration of a criminal case. The accused are roaming freely while the police are a mute spectator,” said Shilpa Verma, vice-president, Haryana Mahila Congress, in Bahadurgarh.

“What more can you expect from the government when the police are unable to ensure justice to a woman beaten up and threatened in broad daylight? Savita made several requests to the police in the past two weeks for the arrest of the accused, but the police turned a deaf ear to her requests,” she said.

Savita said before the assault, she was threatened of dire consequence twice by an anonymous caller. She said she had lodged a complaint on both occasions, but the police failed to identify and arrest the accused.

Recalling the August 10 incident, Savita said she returned home at HUDA Sector 2 in Palwal after a poll meeting. The accused, residing in the same locality, abused her driver when the latter parked the vehicle outside her house, she said.

“When I intervened, they assaulted me and snatched my golden chain. They threatened me of dire consequences. The police have registered a case against five persons, but have yet to make any arrest,” she said.

Sushmita Dev, Mahila Congress national president, had attacked the state government earlier, saying it failed to ensure safety and security of women. Gangrape and other crime against women had become routine due to failure of the BJP government in tightening the noose around criminals, she had alleged.
