Panipat, August 25

Three cooling towers, each with a capacity of 110 MW, of the Panipat Thermal Power Station were demolished using an explosive as they had passed their age in 2015. The towers of units 2, 3 and 4, each 105-m tall, demolished within 100 seconds.

On August 5, cooling tower of unit 1 was demolished.

The four units have been dismantled as the state government has decided to close the four units.

SL Sachdeva, Chief Engineer, said the units were auctioned off and they were sold to the highest bidder, HR Commercial Private Limited, based in Mumbai.

Executive Engineer (XEN) Devender Yadav said the Mumbai firm had hired Jaipur-based company Advanced Quarry Tech to demolish the cooling towers under the control blasting system. Around 650 kg of small dia emulsion explosive was used to demolish the three towers, he added.

The construction of units 1 to 4 started in 1974 and completed in 1988. Later, units 5 to 8 of 220 MW each were constructed. So, the state government decided to shut down the first four units.
