Karnal, August 23

Taking note of a video reportedly showing a runaway couple being beaten up and paraded with garlands of slippers in the district’s Daniyalpur village on Tuesday, Haryana State Commission for Women member Namrata Gaur on Friday visited the youth and assured him of action against a former sarpanch, in whose house the decision to beat up the couple was allegedly taken.

A 20-year-old youth and a 35-year-old woman, who is married with four children, had eloped. They were, however, nabbed and humiliated with their faces blackened. They were reportedly asked to leave the village.

A case was registered against 20 persons, including the husband of the woman, under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Act. Seven of them have been arrested.

Gaur told The Tribune, “I have asked the police to take action against the former sarpanch as nobody has the right to violate the law. I learnt about the incident from the video, which did the rounds on social media, and newspapers. The woman has returned to her native state Jharkhand. I interacted with the youth and assured him of justice. I have asked the police to take action against the former sarpanch as nobody has the right to violate the law.”

She agreed the woman took a wrong step as she was already married. “If she was not happy with her husband, she should have give him a divorce,” she added.

Gaur said the commission would monitor the case till the arrest of all accused. She appreciated the Karnal police for registering an FIR promptly and arresting seven accused.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajiv Kumar said when the matter came to the notice of the police, they immediately registered the case against 20 persons.
