Ropar, August 22
Even as several villages are still submerged in water due to swollen Sutlej, the damage to banks of the river near Chamkaur Sahib is posing danger to more than two dozen villages here.
Though its repair work has been started, locals feel that required efforts were not being made to save their lives and property. Ropar Deputy Commissioner Sumeet Jarangal along with senior officials visited the spot. The officials accompanying the DC said to save the property of people in nearby areas, three spurs needed immediate repair. Over 100 damaged spurs could be repaired only after the water receded, they said, adding that it would require funds of at least Rs 6 crore.
Meanwhile, the initial estimates prepared by different departments involved in survey of damages indicated that property and crops worth over Rs 100 crore have perished in 175 villages and this amount will increase when the water will recede in the area. — TNS
